OUR HISTORY

1929 - Present

A&X traces it's roots back to 1929 when Hans Guthmann, a German immigrant, then in the employ of a man who he worked for for free just to sleep in the office overnight

after having recently moved to Baltimore, met his boss in the morning who told him "I can't make any money with this place, maybe you can." He then proceeded to hand him

the keys and he never saw him again. Hans managed to get his new company off the ground by, after taking night electrical courses, building his own welding machine,

making him one of few to have one at the time. During WW II, A&X did it's part by producing many bomb brackets for America's airforce. After slow steady expansion,

Hans left A&X's original location on Bush Street and built his own new facility, himself, a stones throw south at our current location on Annapolis Road in the 1950's. It is also

at this time that A&X launched it's forray into the Street Lighting industry. Hans continued to lead A&X until his death in 1974, after which his company was eventually

passed to his son Thomas. Thomas continued his fathers legacy, manufacturing street poles for locations around the country, selling products as far away as Oregon. Thomas

expanded our facilities to our current extent, purchasing a lot from a cement company and built another facility across the street from the main location. Thomas remained active

in the company until his death in 2019. In 2012 control of A&X passed from Thomas to his son, and current president, Dustin. Today we continue to strive to uphold a long legacy

of quality to our customers, as we approach our 100th year of operation.
